A "CENTENNIAL" MOMENT:
JOHN BERGER | JBERGER@STARBULLETIN.COM
Danny Kaleikini, left, Thelma Soires, Perry Raanan, Willie K and Ken Guthrie gathered during the Honolulu Centennial Gala Dinner Thursday evening at the Sheraton Waikiki. The event was part of the year-long observance of the centennial of the establishment of the City & County of Honolulu in 1905, and it honored the 104 people who made Honolulu Magazine's controversial "Honolulu 100" list of residents who have made a significant contribution to the city, its life and culture." Such lists are always problematic, but there was no question that honoree Kaleikini had earned his place on the list. Nor was there any questioning Willie's brilliance as he entertained after dinner with a cosmopolitan mix of Hawaiian standards, jazz, rock, pop, comedy and several of his biggest hapa-haole hits. Proceeds will help fund the restoration of Honolulu Hale.
