WAHINE BASKETBALL
Wahine get a win
THE HAWAII women's basketball team claimed its first victory of the 2005-06 season with a final flurry that made Rainbow Wahine head coach Jim Bolla smile.
Granted, it was not a pretty win as Hawaii (1-1) outscored Eastern Illinois 11-5 over the final 2 minutes to claim a 64-58 victory over the Panthers (0-2) in last night's final game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic viewed by 308 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Any time a team has 31 turnovers, finishing on top is difficult, but the Wahine compensated by dominating the boards and sinking 19 of 25 field goals.
Southern California clinched the tournament title with a 68-53 win Sunday over Eastern Illinois.
"The key was we didn't turn it over at the end, made our free throws and got a couple of good rebounds," UH coach Jim Bolla said. "At the end, I kept telling the players to possess the ball and make them foul."
The game's first 5 minutes were a frenzy of players racing up and down the court with little to show on the scoreboard for the effort. The exception was Brittany Grice's two layups off a long pass from Pam Tambini and a quick feed in the lane from Janevia Taylor .
Despite committing a turnover a minute for the first 12 minutes, the Wahine took a 23-11 lead with 6 minutes left in the first half. Dalia Solia stole a ball in front of the UH bench and sent a pass to Tambini for a layup, then passed inside to Tanya Smith for a layup and a 12-point bulge.
Smith, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward from Australia, came off the bench and made four of seven field-goal attempts and hauled in nine rebounds.
"I felt more comfortable this year. We did learn from the USC game and executed better," said Smith, who looks to rebound first and just let the other stuff come.
The Wahine worked the ball well, with 10 assists on their first 11 baskets, but only when they protected the ball and weren't frustrated by the quick Panthers, who covered the passing lanes well.
Eastern Illinois stole the ball nine times in the first half, which compensated in part for an 8-for-32 (.250) shooting effort from the field.
The Panthers, with Megan Sparks providing the offensive impetus, slowly whittled down the UH lead and trailed 30-27 at the half. Sparks scored eight of her 13 points in the final 5:52 of the first half.
Hawaii finished the half with 17 turnovers to seven for Eastern Illinois, but held a 33-16 rebound advantage.
"They created a lot of the turnovers. You have to give them credit. We've been trying to get our players to understand against this kind of team you can't wait for the ball," said Bolla.
"We expected them to be all over the place. They are kind of a crazy team," said Smith. "They hustle and never give up. They knew our plays pretty well."
Two baskets by Solia and a three-point play by Smith put UH up 53-44.
All-tournament team: Shay Murphy and Camille LeNoir, USC; Megan Sparks, Eastern Illinois; Tanya Smith and Amy Sanders, Hawaii. MVP: Chloe Kerr, USC.
