KAHULUI » After considering appointing the University of Hawaii's interim president permanently to the post, the Board of Regents has instead decided to launch a nationwide search for candidates.
Interim President David McClain was among those who advised against appointment, said Kitty Lagareta, chairwoman of the board.
While the position had not been formally offered to McClain, it had been discussed with him as among the options the board was considering to fill the spot, Lagareta said Thursday as the board met on Maui.
"He appreciated that we were so happy and that we wanted to do that and that we were considering that process, but he said -- and we came to agree -- that the proper thing to do and the right way to do these things is to go through an official search," she said.
University spokeswoman Carolyn Tanaka said that McClain has said he will decide whether to be a candidate for the post once the search officially begins.
