Multiple sex offender is accused of assaulting boy during 3 months
A CONVICTED sex offender was arrested yesterday after he allegedly fondled a 10-year-old boy over a three-month period.
The 41-year-old man was arrested on five counts of third-degree sex assault and for failing to register a change of address as a sex offender. Police said the suspect had been sexually assaulting the victim from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31 at an undisclosed location in Kaimuki.
Police arrested the suspect at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine at 651 Ilalo St. in Kakaako on Tuesday morning. He has been employed there since May.
A spokesman for the medical school said the suspect was a temporary hire who worked in the information technology department and that the sexual assault did not happen on UH property or involve UH personnel.
The suspect was sentenced to a year in jail and five years' probation in 1996 after being convicted of fondling an 8-year-old boy. The offenses occurred from late 1993 to mid-1994 while he was employed as a Kamehameha Schools video technician. That victim was not a student there, and the assaults took place off campus.
During sentencing, Circuit Judge Victoria Marks ordered that the man could not work in any school system again. Prosecutors said the suspect also had a 1988 conviction from another state for a similar offense, for which he received three years' probation.
