Suspensions a big concern for Warriors in BIIF title game
KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAII led Division II schools in Big Island Interscholastic Federation football, but the ejection of two key players in a 55-20 win over Hilo is cause for concern.
Wide receiver-defensive back Pono Kaleohano caught two touchdown passes, recorded three tackles and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. Two-way lineman Ikaika Mahoe forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, had one sack and blocked a punt in the victory.
Both players are not expected to play in Friday's D-II title game against Konawaena. An ejection brings with it a penalty of an automatic one-game suspension.
Kamehameha-Hawaii won the regular-season meeting but since then, Konawaena has turned to a new quarterback and become an offensive juggernaut.
If the Warriors overcome the suspensions and win the title, it will give Kamehameha Schools at least two teams in the state football championships.
Kamehameha-Maui clinched a state berth by winning the Maui Interscholastic League D-II crown last week.
The Warriors of Kapalama meet Saint Louis tonight in the first leg of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's tiebreaker playoff.
Third time a charm:
The ILH Division I football race has been about matchups.
Saint Louis lost twice to Punahou, which in turn lost twice to Kamehameha. Kamehameha has lost twice to Saint Louis, including Saturday's 17-7 loss that forced a three-way tie at the end of regular-season play.
Tonight, Kamehameha gets a third shot at the Crusaders. The winner plays Punahou for the league's only state tournament berth.
The loser is done for the season. Will the third time be the charm for Kamehameha?
"I wanna hope so. I would hope so," Warriors coach Doss Tannehill said. "We are preparing our game plan as you speak."
A win by Kamehameha on Saturday would have clinched an ILH championship.
"We had a good week of practice, but we didn't take care of business," Tannehill said.
"I just think we just couldn't get some things done offensively and the defense was on the field too long."
Elimination game:
League titles are on the line in the BIIF, ILH and OIA, but Saturday's third-place game between Farrington and Waianae carries tremendous weight.
The winner advances to the state tournament. The loser will call it a season. Kickoff is at Roosevelt, 7 p.m.
