Hawaii basketball team's big men on the mend
The Hawaii basketball team's front line was a bit thin for yesterday's practice.
Seniors Chris Botez and Milos Zivanovic sat out the session. UH head coach Riley Wallace said Botez was out with the flu and expects him to be available for Friday's exhibition game against Hawaii-Hilo. Zivanovic has a dislocated left thumb and will have a specialist examine the injury.
Forwards Julian Sensley and Ahmet Gueye were also hurt in a spill late in practice. Sensley was diagnosed with a sprained right ankle. Gueye re-aggravated a knee and will have it checked by a doctor today.

UH opens the regular season Nov. 19 against No. 4 Michigan State.
Hawaii Mega Force's ABA season coming up
The Hawaii Mega Force is slated to open its inaugural season in the American Basketball Association at home against the Inglewood Cobras on Nov. 17.
The team was originally scheduled to face Tacoma on Sunday, but Mega Force owner Orrys Williams said Tacoma requested the game be moved to January. Williams said the team is close to securing Blaisdell Arena for its home games.
Williams plans to have a 16-player roster finalized by the end of the week, with several local players included on the team. The Mega Force, coached by former Chaminade standout George Gilmore, plans to hold a scrimmage against a military team Thursday at Bloch Arena. A time has yet to be announced.

Irons surfs into fourth round in Brazil
Kauai's Andy Irons beat Heitor Alves in 2-4 foot conditions yesterday to advance to the fourth round of the Nova Schin Festival surf contest in Brazil.
Irons will meet Bede Durbridge today, surf permitting, with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals of the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour event.
Hawaii's Fred Patacchia Jr. is also in the chase for the Nova Schin title. He beat two others in his first-round heat and advanced all the way to the third round, where he'll face Renan Rocha.
Hawaii maintains No. 9 volleyball ranking
Hawaii remained at No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 volleyball poll released yesterday.
The Wahine (18-6), winners of their last 12, received 1,029 points.
The top four teams remained the same, led by Nebraska (23-0), which received 58 of the 60 first-place votes. Washington (1,440), with the other two first-place votes, was second.
» Hawaii Pacific retained its No. 2 spot in the Division II poll, and Brigham Young-Hawaii jumped up two slots to No. 19.
Hawaii golfers in fifth place at Kaneohe
The University of Hawaii men's golf team shot an opening-round 5-over 293 yesterday and are in fifth place heading into today's second round of the UH Fall Intercollegiate at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
UH's Jarett Hamamoto is tied for eighth after a 1-under 71.
New Mexico State is in the lead at 5-under 283, and San Diego State's Luke Antonelli and UNLV's C.J. Gatto are tied for the individual lead at 6-under 66. The final round is tomorrow.
» Kevin Hayashi of Mauna Kea Resort and amateur partner Elton Tanaka are the first-round leaders in the Aloha Section PGA's Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship at Pearl Country Club.
Hayashi and Tanaka shot a 61 yesterday in the two-man scramble format. Harold Perry and Chris Souza are a shot back.
