A fine day for cosplay
Happy Halloween or, as I like to think of it, happy National Cosplay Day! It's the one day out of the year when anime and manga cosplayers, or people who like dressing up as various characters, can blend in with the rest of the general population. Have fun and stay safe.
For those of you who are older, can afford to stay out late and might be all dressed up with nowhere to go, some members of Oahu Anime Explorer will be roaming the streets of Waikiki tonight in costume. I'll be joining them, and in costume, too ... all I'll say is that I'll be wearing something a shade more complex than what's in that lovely little mug shot above.
(As an aside: One of the more frequently asked questions I've received from friends, family and co-workers is, "What are you wearing in that picture, anyway?" The cap is a head of a Puchuu from the anime series "Excel Saga," and I'm holding a stuffed soot sprite from "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Spirited Away." And now you know.)
Want to join us? Meet us outside GS Studios in Waikiki, 320 Lewers St., at 11 p.m. It'll be fun ...
Cosplay in the stars
While I'm on the topic of cosplay, Anime News Network (
www.animenewsnetwork.com) recently noted that Japanese Internet entrepreneur Daisuke Enomoto wants to dress up as "Gundam" character Char Aznable when he becomes the fourth "space tourist" to the International Space Station, pending approval by the Russian Space Agency. He is a big fan of the series.
No word yet on whether the capsule taking Enomoto up will need to be converted to a giant "Gundam" robot (or "mobile suits," as the truly dedicated fans call them), but hey, if it takes cosplay to new frontiers, I'm all for it ...
