"Fables from Beneath the Rainbow"

By Leslie Ann Hayashi, illustrated by Kathleen Wong Bishop
(Mutual Publishing, $14.95)

Although marketed to appeal to readers of all ages, "Fables" is primarily a children's book. This is the fourth addition in the "Fables" series and features 10 stories about rare plants and animals from Hawaii. The first three books in the series were "Fables from the Garden," "Fables from the Sea" and "Fables from the Deep." All of these books are finely written and strikingly illustrated in bright watercolors.

"All Around the Islands"

By Vera Arita, illustrated by Ruth Cabanting
(Beachhouse Publishing, $12.95)

"All Around the Islands" is another beautifully illustrated children's book that offers 10 different songs that teach young children to count from one to 10. Waipahu native Vera Arita wrote the songs, and her experience as a teacher at Mililiani Ike Elementary School serves her well as a writer who can communicate with small children. Also, Ruth Cabanting's colorful artwork will surely delight her audience.
