Upstart Govs shock Trojans
Two late fourth-quarter touchdowns allowed Farrington to upset Oahu Interscholastic Association West champ Mililani on the Trojans' home field last night.
Farrington quarterback Elijah Filifili threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns as the Governors defeated the Trojans 20-19.
Farrington (5-5) advances to play the winner of tonight's Kahuku-Kapolei game. The semifinals will be held at Aloha Stadium next Friday.
Mililani ends the season at 6-3.
"They believed," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "They believed in themselves and each other and never put their heads down. That's the key."
Down by 13 points entering the final quarter, the Govs got a big break that would make the difference down the stretch.
It seemed as if Mililani had the game wrapped up when Jordan Torres returned a kickoff to the Governors' 1-yard line, already leading 19-13. But on the next play, the Trojans fumbled the ball away, giving Farrington another chance to score. Filifili's 30-yard completion to Tanner Fetui set up his 13-yard touchdown pass to Fetui to tie it at 19.
Larry Siuta added the extra point, giving the Governors the 20-19 lead with less than 4 minutes to play. From there, the Farrington defense took over. Without any timeouts, Mililani's pass on fourth down was knocked down with less than 2 minutes remaining, signaling a win for the Govs.
"You just practice for those things, you never know. And it came up," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said of his team's final drive. "The boys pulled it out."
The first half was really only about two big plays that allowed the Trojans to take a 10-6 lead at the break.
It took the Governors less than a minute to get on the board. On the second down of the game, Filifili dropped back and threw a deep ball to Elijah Lesu, who had gotten open downfield. Once the ball was in Lesu's hands, the junior ran up the middle of the field for the easy 71-yard score.
But after that initial strike, neither team could produce any notable offense. The Trojans, stifled by a Governor defense that was able to pick up Mililani's numerous draws and reverses, were held to just 26 yards of total offense in the first quarter.
But with one flick of his wrist, junior quarterback John Abreu brought the Trojans to life, connecting with Michael Smith for an 88-yard score after Smith ran past his coverage into the open field. The touchdown and following PAT suddenly put the Trojans on top, 7-6.
Smith finished with two catches for 115 yards and two field goals.
With just 2 minutes to go in the half, the Trojans drove down the field again, this time aided by two costly Farrington penalties that put Mililani 17 yards closer to the end zone.
The Trojans, led by two Jordan Torres rushes that ate up 17 more yards on the drive, extended their lead with a 37-yard Smith field goal as the clock ran out.
