Rainbow Wahine net 100th victory

From staff and wire reports

SAN JOSE, Calif. » The 100th victory in the history of the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer program came at an opportune time.

In a showdown for first place in the Western Athletic Conference, the Rainbow Wahine adjusted to a wet field in the second half and beat the San Jose State Spartans 2-0 yesterday.

Gabina Bohlman and Krisha Kai scored the UH goals and goalkeeper Kori Lu made 10 saves, tying a season high.

"Winning this game on the road was crucial. The Spartans are very difficult to play against. They have a few kids who can turn instantly and shoot," Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.

"Our defense played well and Kori Lu was outstanding. In the first half she stopped a tremendous left-footed volley shot by Nicole Irwin and later on pushed a very well-taken shot over the bar."

Hawaii (8-7-2 overall, 4-1 WAC) broke a 0-0 deadlock early in the second half when Bohlman drove home a loose ball from 10 yards out at 50:12.

"We took too long to get used to the field and didn't play well in the first half. We did a much better job of controlling the ball in the second half," Tenzing said.

The insurance goal came at 82:05 when Kai poked a loose ball out of a scramble in front of the net across the line. The play started with a corner kick by Koren Takeyama.

A minute before that goal Natasha Kai, credited with an assist on Bohlman's goal, had one of her seven shots rebound off the crossbar.

"Tasha didn't score, but she made a huge difference. They had people all around her and that opened up space for other people," Tenzing said.

The shutout was this third for Lu, a freshman from San Clemente, Calif., and the seventh of the season for UH.

The victory guarantees UH a spot in the WAC postseason tournament that will be held at Boise State, Nov. 3-5.

Tenzing, the only head coach since the program started in 1994, has a career record of 100-107-18 (.484).
