Sceats leads Rainbows at regionals
University of Hawaii senior Ryan Sceats won both his singles and doubles matches yesterday to advance in the main draw of the Wilson/ITA North Western Region Championships in Santa Clara, Calif.
Sceats was the only Rainbow Warrior to advance past the round of 64, where he defeated Stanford's Ken Kao, 6-2, 6-4. Jarrod Diepraam and Jeff Fitch, UH's other representatives in the round, each lost their matches.
In doubles action, Sceats and Diepraam won their round of 64 match against Will McCallister and Thomas Morton of Sacramento State, 8-4. Also, Hawaii's Chad Faulk and Bryon Weinberg defeated Luis Gonzalez and Darragh Rowan of Portland, 8-6, while Rainbows Brent Hunter and Yasuo Sakurai defeated Milos Popvic and Randy Reynolds of Nevada, 8-1.
Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine tennis team, who is competing in San Diego, has no members remaining in the main draw. In consolation play, Kana Aikawa and Fenja Shaw each won their singles matches yesterday. In the doubles main draw, Jacqui Williams and Chloe Bihag lost their round of 32 match to UC Irvine's Bela Mijic and Clare Fermin, 8-1, while Aikawa and Samantha Capella lost to Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru and Eva Dickes, 8-3.
Both tournaments continue today.
