For years Kam Bowl has come up the winner in any quest for the best oxtail soup, but how about a foodie twist on that tried-and-true local favorite?

Try the oxtail risotto ($18, when available) as served up at Town. The rice is stirred through with the requisite peanuts and confetti of cilantro accompanying two fork-tender oxtails.

As the finishing touch, the oxtails are topped with a brightening dollop of ginger and green onion pesto to counter some of the richness. If that combo sounds familiar, it's a modified version of the sauce served with cold ginger chicken. A double dose of local favorites!

I'm always interested in what's new, and if it tastes ono, that's even better. So you'll find me at the 41st Annual Food & New Products Show at Neal Blaisdell sometime this weekend, sampling some of the ono creations people come up with. While there, I'll probably stop by the Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament to find out why so many people are hooked on the card game. (Watching the TV games doesn't cut it.) And of course I have to see just what goes into winning the show's Couch Potato Challenge. I think last year's winner simply fell asleep on the couch. No drooling.

Show hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 general; $4 for 65 and older, keiki 7 through 12 and military personnel with ID; and free for kids under 7 accompanied by a paying adult.

The remaining part of my weekend (and all of next week) will be spent at the Hawai'i International Film Festival. Props to those who watch five films in a day. My butt can only sit through three films max.

Hooray, the holiday season is here! I'm starting Halloween festivities before the crowd gets crazy by taking my son to the Aloun Farms Pumpkin Patch. There's always several fun events for the kids. For more Halloween outings, see Page 12.
