The Rainbow Wahine (7-7-2) made a goal at 9:57 stand up for the next 80 minutes despite showing fatigue from their third match in four days.
Shawn Higa's corner kick from the right side found the head of Adria Campbell waiting unmarked by the back post. The junior striker put the ball in the net, the only shot on goal in the first half.
It was Campbell's fourth goal and Higa's fourth assist this season.
"We got to play everybody and that is the good side," Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
"Off and on the kids played good soccer, but they are tired. It's good to have a little break and to have this victory going into San Jose."
The Wahine return to Western Athletic Conference action Friday against the Spartans at San Jose, Calif.
UH's leading scorer, Natasha Kai, did not play for a second consecutive match due to a sprained neck, but Tenzing said she would be available Friday.
The Rainbow Wahine outshot the Wolverines, 13-10. Utah Valley State (3-10) lost its fifth consecutive match.
Kori Lu and Mahie Atay combined for the shutout win, the fifth time they have done that this season.
