Weston leads Aggies over Wahine
LOGAN, Utah » Hawaii surrendered its first Western Athletic Conference goals of the season and Utah State ended the Rainbow Wahine's modest winning streak at three matches yesterday.
Charity Weston scored two unassisted goals for the Aggies (5-7-3, 2-1) in the 2-1 victory at the Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
Hawaii played without senior striker and leading scorer Natasha Kai, who suffered a sprained neck Friday in the match at Louisiana Tech.
"We didn't play too well. On the only day they could have beaten us they took advantage because we didn't have Tasha and we need her speed up top," Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
Weston, a junior striker and the Aggies' top scorer with six goals, got her first one at 12:19. She went one-on-one with UH goalkeeper Kori Lu, who dove and blocked Weston's first attempt. However, the ball bounced up in the air and Weston headed it onto the goal.
"We didn't track the person down on the first goal," Tenzing said.
Hawaii (6-7-2, 3-1) tied the score at 25:09 on a goal by junior striker Adria Campbell. She took a shot and then a second that USU goalie Kelli Allred blocked and tried to smother, but the ball squirted loose and Campbell put it in the net on her third try.
Sophomore midfielder Gabina Bohlman set up the score by breaking loose down the middle and dropping the ball for Campbell.
The game-winner came off a corner kick, which Tenzing said was given away unnecessarily. A through ball that looked like it would roll over the end line died in the high grass and the UH defense was forced to play it over the line at the last moment.
Weston tried to volley the ball off the corner kick, but it hit a UH defender. Luckily for Weston, the ball came back and her second shot went in under the cross bar at 70:09.
That score ended senior goalkeeper Mahie Atay's school-record consecutive-minutes streak of not allowing a goal at 533.
"We didn't get going for 10 or 15 minutes and the players were breathing hard in the altitude," Tenzing said.
"Tasha wanted to play, but the trainer (Jayson Goo) kept her out and I'm not going to second-guess him."
Koren Takeyama started up front in place of Kai, and Taryn Fukuroku and Krisha Kai also saw time up front with Campbell.
The Rainbow Wahine play Utah Valley State in a nonconference match today.
