WAHINE VOLLEYBALL
Mason, middles lead Wahine past Vandals
MOSCOW, Idaho » Idaho may be a new conference opponent, but it was the same old result for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball team.
The No. 11-ranked squad got 19 kills from junior outside hitter Sarah Mason and a combined 25 kills from middles Juliana Sanders and Victoria Prince in sweeping the Vandals last night. Hawaii needed just 95 minutes to defeat Idaho in front of 871 at Memorial Gym, 30-24, 30-22, 30-18, winning its 97th consecutive Western Athletic Conference match.
"It was quicker than I expected, but that's a good thing," Wahine coach Dave Shoji said. "I think our serving took them out of their offense, they weren't able to run what they wanted to do.
"Juli and Victoria had nice nights. They were on and, if we can run our middles like that, we're hard to beat. Tonight, Juli and Victoria were physically better than their middles and they (the Vandals) just weren't able to block them.
"For our first trip here, we did all right."
The Wahine take a six-match winning streak up the road to Boise State tomorrow. Hawaii (12-6, 6-0) takes on BSU (4-9, 0-6) at Bronco Gym in an afternoon match (10 a.m. Hawaii time).
The Wahine easily defeated the Broncos in the WAC opener for both teams back on Sept. 22 at the Stan Sheriff Center, 30-17, 30-10, 30-21.
"But we need to keep our focus," Shoji said. "You never know what's going to happen on the road."
Hawaii has now won 34 consecutive matches on an opponent's home court. The Wahine did it with a balanced attack and tough serving.
For a second straight match, Prince served the opponent off the court. The senior had four of the team's seven aces, including three straight that helped give Hawaii a 4-0 lead in Game 2.
"Victoria had a lot of family here," Shoji said. "She had some motivation."
Prince finished with 11 kills, hitting .429, and was in on six of UH's nine blocks. Sanders had 14 kills, hitting .550.
Amanda Bowman led Idaho (10-9, 2-4) with nine kills.
While sophomore hitter Tara Hittle was not as productive as Shoji would have liked (two kills), she did lead the team in digs with 18.
