Design guru workshop
Chances are if you've stepped foot into a model home or had dinner at a fine restaurant recently, you've walked into a space created by interior designer Mary Philpotts McGrath and her crew. Now, you have a chance to see the design guru in action as she conducts a presentation on interior design at 1 p.m. Oct. 22.
Philpotts McGrath will also be on hand to sign copies of her book, "Hawaii a Sense of Place: Island Interior Design."
The free workshop and book signing will be held at Macy's Ala Moana Special Events Room on the third floor. Call 945-6427 for reservations.
Construction seminar
Hurricanes and tsunamis have major impacts on the supply and demand of construction materials. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, building costs are increasing across the United States.
Find out how destruction caused by disasters could affect the construction industry in Hawaii at a seminar organized by the Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance.
"Impacts of Hurricanes and Other Calamities on Construction Materials" will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Willows Restaurant. Call 485-1400 or e-mail mtorres@hawaiisteel.com
CRIB NOTES
Orchids on display at Blaisdell
An orchid is not just an orchid, and you can see for yourself during the "Masquerade of Orchids," this weekend at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
As the 2005 Honolulu Orchid Show theme suggests, orchids will be used in creative displays, with more than 30 of both traditional and contemporary stylings representing 10 schools of ikebana. A focal sculptural arrangement will also be on exhibit. Ikebana international member Karen Bowman-Kirk will give a free hands-on ikebana workshop at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
The event, presented by the Ikebana International Honolulu Chapter 56, runs from noon to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $3.
