This may be the year of the kicker, and if it is, fans will get to witness some outstanding talent at the state tournament.
Kamehameha-Hawaii's Leon Peralto has 60-yard range without a tee, having missed a 64-yarder in league play. He has made all 31 of his PAT tries and has also kicked five field goals.
Not to be ignored is Radford's Jamie Whitworth, who has 55-yard range without a tee. He missed a 53-yarder against Moanalua when the ball hit the crossbar. He later barely missed wide on a 52-yard attempt, both without a tee.
Iolani's Kody Wells hasn't attempted a field goal that long just yet, but wows Raider fans each week with his warmups before each half when he regularly knocks 50-yarders through the uprights with a tee.
Franke-ly speaking: Kealakehe soccer standout Laura Franke has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Bethel College (Mishawaka, Ind.).
The three-time All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation pick led the Waveriders to a 14-5 mark last season.
No tourney for KS-Hawaii: Due to scheduling conflicts with their main gym, the Kamehameha-Hawaii Warriors won't host a girls basketball tournament in the spring, coach Kimo Miller said.
The program is looking into the possibility of hosting a summer tournament, he added.
Warriors seek coach: Between his job as a teacher at Hilo and coaching the Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball team, John DeSa was being stretched thin.
Despite his love for coaching, it was time for the baseball lifer to step down as coach recently.
"Last year, I'd get there at 3 o'clock, when the game starts. A lot of things happen when you're not there. I wanna do things the right way, if I'm gonna do it," he said.
DeSa, who coached at KS-Hawaii for three seasons, applied for a teaching position at the KS-Hawaii campus, hoping to bridge the gap, but didn't get the job.
Still, if the Warriors can find a coach who can be there early and run the program the way it needs to be run, DeSa will be satisfied.
"Me and Coach Wags basically have a great relationship," he said of athletic director Bob Wagner. "He felt for me and he tried to get me on (the faculty) and things didn't work out. It's a small school and there aren't a lot of positions."
DeSa isn't sure who the next coach will be.
"I want my staff to stay, but a new coach will probably want to bring a new staff on," he said. "Wags told me he's in denial. He didn't really want me to step down, but I told him for the last two years."
