No. 11 Hawaii gears up for 2 WAC road matches
Hawaii, the only unbeaten volleyball team left in Western Athletic Conference play, remained at No. 11 for the third straight week in yesterday's CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll.
The Rainbow Wahine (11-6, 5-0) put their 96-match WAC winning streak on the road this week with matches at Idaho (10-7, 2-3) on Thursday and Boise State (4-8, 0-5) on Saturday.
There was little movement in the latest poll, with the top 17 teams staying the same. No. 1 Nebraska (15-0) received 55 of the 60 first-place votes, followed by Washington (14-0), which earned the other five votes.
» Hawaii Pacific (14-1) jumped one spot to No. 4 in the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll.
Brigham Young-Hawaii (13-3) stayed at No. 21.
UH's Kai sisters earn WAC soccer honors
Hawaii soccer-playing sisters Natasha and Krisha Kai earned Western Athletic Conference soccer offensive and defensive players of the week.
Natasha, a senior, scored three goals and added two assists in victories over Idaho and Boise State.
She scored twice in the win over the Vandals, her third multiple-goal match of the season and 18th of her career.
Krisha helped the Rainbow Wahine post back-to-back shutouts (4-0 over Idaho and 3-0 over Boise State). She also added an assist with a corner kick on one of Natasha's goals against the Broncos.
Hawaii (5-6-2) has four straight road matches, starting at Louisiana Tech on Friday.
Pro-Am volleyball coming Nov. 5
The top Pro-Am beach volleyball teams from around the United States are coming to Honolulu to compete for cash prizes in the 14th Annual Corona Light EVP Pro-Am Volleyball finals.
Some of the top players, such as Mark Paaluhi of Honolulu and Leeane Haarbauer, will be available to meet with fans.
A welcome party is at Lulu's on Nov. 4 from 8-10 p.m. The tournament is at Queen's Beach on Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Vulcans in tie for seventh in Washington
Hawaii-Hilo is in seventh place with a four-player total of 49-over-par 341 after the first round of the Western Washington Invite women's golf tournament in Bellingham, Wash.
Western Washington leads the tournament with a 17-over 309.
The Vulcans' Kristen Higa is tied for sixth after shooting a 6-over 79.
» The Hawaii-Hilo men's team is tied for ninth place with a four-player total of 25-over 601 after two rounds of the Chico State Wells Fargo Invitational tournament in Chico, Calif.
CSU-Bakersfield is in first place with a 3-under 573.
The Vulcans' Colin Gilliam shot a second straight 74 yesterday and is tied for 18th with a 4-over 148.
