Sinkhole investigation to close Ward Avenue
The makai-bound lanes of Ward Avenue between Kinau and Beretania streets will be closed from 9 p.m. today to 5 a.m. tomorrow so workers can try to determine what caused a sinkhole last week.
Makai-bound traffic might be diverted onto a mauka-bound lane of Ward Avenue or detoured to Victoria Street, depending on traffic.
City environmental services officials suspect a cavity has developed near a sewer main.
Applicants sought for City Lights displays
Nonprofit organizations hoping to erect their own displays on the Civic Center grounds during Honolulu City Lights have until next Tuesday to submit their applications.
The city will issue permits for five display sites. The organizations will be selected by lottery on Nov. 1.
Only organizations that qualify as nonprofit or charitable under state or federal laws are eligible. Proof must be submitted with the applications.
Interested groups should call Patty Teruya, city special events coordinator, at 527-5759 for applications.
Public, schools invited to UH science event
"SOEST: The Hot Spot for Cool Science" is the theme of the eighth open house at the University of Hawaii-Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.
The free event will be open for school groups from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and for the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Interactive activities will be held on the UH-Manoa campus in and around the Pacific Ocean Science and Technology building, the Marine Science Building and Hawaii Institute of Geophysics Institute.

65-year-old is arrested for alleged sex assault
Police arrested a 65-year-old Pearl City man after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 6-year-old boy.
About 3 p.m. Friday, police said, the victim was playing in the back yard of his apartment complex on the 1400 block of Kaahumanu Street when the suspect asked him to show his penis.
The victim refused, and the suspect grabbed the victim's penis over his clothing with his hands before the victim ran away.
The following day, police said the victim told his mother what happened.
Police arrested the 65-year-old man on suspicion of third-degree assault. He was released pending further investigation.
Police seek suspect in Waipahu hit-run
Honolulu police are asking for the public's help in finding the vehicle and driver involved Sept. 19 in a hit-and-run incident in Waipahu.
A 78-year-old Waipahu man was crossing Hikimoe Street about 8:45 p.m. when a vehicle struck him, knocking him to the ground, police said.
He suffered fractures in his pelvis and left leg.
The vehicle is described as a black Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle that might have front-end damage.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or the driver is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME by cellular telephone.

Police seek inmate from furlough center

Police are also asking for help in finding a prison inmate who failed to return Saturday to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center in Kalihi.
Paul Nakamura, 32, was granted parole Sept. 20 and was to be released after showing proof of residency to the Hawaii Paroling Authority.
He had served time in prison for burglary, forgery and drug promotion.

Big Isle police arrest 16 for drunken driving
Big Island police arrested 16 drivers for drunken driving during the past week through the Columbus Day weekend.
The 16 arrests were made from last Tuesday through yesterday. Three of the drivers arrested on drunken driving violations had been involved in motor vehicle crashes. Five drivers were under the age of 21, police said.
Thus far this year, police have made 803 drunken driving arrests compared with 807 for the same period last year, dropping by 0.5 percent.
