Nona Beamer signs new book at Na Mea Hawaii Sunday
Nona Beamer will hold a book signing for "Pua Polu, the Pretty Blue Hawaiian Flower," at Native Books Na Mea Hawaii at Ward Warehouse Sunday from 11 a.m. to noon. A CD with the song "Pua Polu," performed by Nona's son,
Keola Beamer, comes with the book. The Hawaiian text is by
Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, Nona's hanai son. Back in 1958 the young Nona Beamer was featured as a character in cartoonist
Hank Ketchem's "Dennis the Menace" comic book set in Hawaii. Nona's page was devoted to her teaching hula to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." The Star-Bulletin's
Burl Burlingame reviewed Ketchem's work Oct. 2, but he forgot to mention Nona's hula page. That brought friendly criticism from Burl's friend, hula cameraman

New Catholic Bishop Larry Silva surprised the folks at Thursday's morning Mass at St. Patrick's Church. He showed up unannounced and presided at the Mass. He said he is making the rounds of daily Mass at all parishes and picked St. Pat's that day because it was the date his parents, Richard and Catherine Alves Silva, were married there 60 years ago ... Thursday at Waikiki Shell, Candes addressed the 2,500 athletes in the ITU JAL Honolulu World Championship Triathlon in English and Spanish. Although Candes is an American citizen, officials asked her to represent Argentina, her mom's home country, in the Sunday event as Argentina was not represented. After competing, Candes sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Hawaii Ponoi" at the awards ceremony ...
