Kamehameha up to fourth after win
Kamehameha's victory over Iolani left coach Doss Tannehill relieved, happy and determined.
Though the Warriors secured a big-league win, penalties in the 37-29 win weren't easy for him to forget. In all, Kamehameha committed 13 for 105 yards.
"We still have too many bonehead mistakes," said Tannehill, a veteran assistant coach who took the helm as head coach this year.
Kamehameha rose to No. 3 in today's Star-Bulletin Football Top 10. More importantly, the Warriors' win over Iolani is big in a league divided. The Division I squads of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu play a double round-robin schedule on their side. They also play the Division II teams once.
The dangerous Iolani Raiders are a special problem for the D-I teams. Their passing attack is as lethal as any statewide. Kiran Kepo'o finished with 219 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
"They're gonna get their points," Tannehill said. "We beat a great team that played with great heart."
Kamehameha stuck to basics, giving the ball to Bryson Vivas 36 times for 255 rushing yards. "We know Bryson can get us yards in the trenches, and he did it all bus' up," quarterback Kahaku Ka'ai said of Vivas, who played with a sore knee.
