Vivas carries Warriors

Finesse scores points, but power rules almighty.

Bryson Vivas rushed for a career-high 255 yards on 36 carries as fourth-ranked Kamehameha outlasted No. 3 Iolani 37-29 last night at Aloha Stadium.

Kamehameha improved to 2-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (6-2 overall), occupying first place in the Division I race by just a hair. Iolani, the favorite in Division II, dropped to 2-1 (5-2 overall). The Raiders still have a healthy chance to challenge for the league title by season's end.

"We played a helluva team tonight," Kamehameha coach Doss Tannehill said. "We knew we had to run the ball, and Bryson is capable of this kind of stuff. He started out hot and we made the decision to stick with him."

Vivas didn't slow down despite an aching knee. He took a shot in the face just before the half, as well.

"It was all the O-line. I was under pressure, but the O-line stepped up," said Vivas, who relied heavily on right tackle Ryan Pohl and center Koa Yamashita. "Even our receivers were making some good blocks."

The Warriors rushed for 293 yards, helping first-year starting quarterback Kahaku Ka'ai get his rhythm. The junior completed 12 of his 16 attempts, including six in a row at one point, for 139 yards and three touchdowns.

Iolani started slowly but seemed to have the Kamehameha secondary fatigued in the late going.

"If we had a few more minutes or so, we could've had a chance," said Iolani quarterback Kiran Kepo'o, who passed for 219 yards and four touchdowns without a pick.

The Warriors scored on their third offensive series, marching 55 yards in six plays. Vivas exploded off right tackle for a 36-yard touchdown run, giving his team a 7-0 lead with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter.

Iolani faced fourth down from its own 16-yard line moments later when the punt snap sailed high and out of the end zone for a safety. Kamehameha led 9-0 with 3:11 left in the first quarter.

Kamehameha got the ensuing free kick and drove 55 yards again. Vivas and his hulking offensive line pounded away for four plays in a row before Ka'ai connected on a perfect strike down the sideline for a 33-yard touchdown pass. Kamehameha led 16-0 with 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Iolani finally responded with points on its next series. Kepo'o hit Travis Nishioka and Blayne Yama on key third-down conversions, setting up a 20-yard touchdown pass to Lionel Fujioka.

Kepo'o dropped in a perfect pass to Mike Hirokawa on the 2-point conversion, and Iolani was within 16-8 with 9:23 left in the second quarter.

The Warriors were undeterred. They handed the ball to Vivas seven times in a row, and on fourth and 1, called timeout. To Iolani's surprise, the Warriors sprinted out to the hashmarks to start their next play as the timeout ended, and Iolani was whistled for an illegal substitution. That drew the ire of Look, who argued with officials for 10 minutes.

Vivas picked up where he left off, carrying three consecutive times. That set up a Ka'ai-to-Nichols touchdown pass of 28 yards, giving Kamehameha a 23-8 lead with 3:15 to go in the first half.

"We had our 11 guys on the field. How does the guy on that side know that? That was the turning point, but that one call didn't cost us the game," Look said. "Our defense gave up too many big plays, and our offense wasn't consistent."

Iolani's offense continued rolling. A roughing-the-passer call helped the Raiders, but a double-reverse flea-flicker gave Kepo'o an easy 31-yard touchdown pass to Nishioka.

No. 5 Saint Louis 34, Pac-Five 7

The 'Pack had a tied score with Saint Louis, but the Crusaders didn't budge. Cody Wells led the way with 93 yards and Saint Louis amassed a whopping 324 rushing yards en route to a win last night at Aloha Stadium.

The win vaulted the Crusaders to 2-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (4-2 overall). It was also the debut of Jeremiah Masoli, a transfer who ran for 76 yards on four attempts, including a 54-yard scoring jaunt as Cameron Higgins' backup at quarterback.

Pac-Five dropped to 0-3 in league play (2-4 overall) despite a gritty defensive effort.

Robert Azevedo-Ford scored first for Kaimuki as the Bulldogs led 8-0. McKinley tied the game on a touchdown by Kaluna.

Hashimoto's touchdown broke the tie in the third quarter and the Tigers added a touchdown and a field goal by Chelsie Sato in the fourth.
