Jerry Konanui twisted out the root-based drink known as kava into a coconut shell at the Hawaii Pacific Islands Kava Festival, held at the University of Hawaii Manoa campus yesterday. Konanui and others participated in a demonstration of how kava, also known as 'awa or sakau, is made on the Micronesian island of Pohnpei.

The Double Ten Festival, a celebration of the establishment on Oct. 10, 1911, of the People's Republic of China, was held yesterday at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza. A parade staged in conjunction with the festival marched from Chinatown Cultural Plaza along Kukui, Maunakea and Beretania streets to Sun Yat Sen Mall. Britney Wong, 2 1/2 , waved the Taiwanese and U.S. flags during the festivities.

The 10th Annual Discover Moiliili Festival yesterday featured a crafts fair, country store, farmers' market, and entertainment at the Old Stadium Park. Kiralee Kuraoka, 2, was enjoying herself in the "pumpkin patch" in the kids' Halloween play area.
