Hilo Hattie recently presented a $35,000 check to the March of Dimes at the company's first annual charity golf tournament, held at the Honolulu Country Club.
Nearly 130 business leaders contributed to the event. In addition to the check, Hilo Hattie employees raised more than $13,000 for the organization by selling March of Dimes sneakers and "blinkie pins."
Money donated to the March of Dimes goes toward research, community services, education and advocacy to help improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
Paul de Ville, president and chief executive officer of Pomare Ltd., dba Hilo Hattie, said they plan to hold annual golf tournaments to assist other charitable organizations in coming years.
"Hilo Hattie feels a strong responsibility to the community. We were delighted to take on this and continue to do it year after year," de Ville said.
