DIY for AARP set
Home Depot together with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is offering three workshops Tuesday geared for the more mature set at Home Depots statewide. Research conducted on behalf of Home Depot and the AARP determined the topics of interest to mature homeowners which have resulted in the following workshops:

» Home energy efficiency projects that save you money, noon.
» Preventative home maintenance to protect your most valuable asset, 7 p.m.

Get energy smart at Ala Moana Center
Catch the bus to "Live Energy Lite" and you could leave the winner of a 2006 Toyota Prius at HECO's "Live Energy Lite" celebration 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15 at Ala Moana Center.
October is Energy Awareness month and Ala Moana Centerstage will be transformed to energy awareness central, charged with events beginning with entertainment by Ho'okena and Keahiwai. And if you didn't think science could ever be crazy fun, The Mad Scientists, a group of four island teachers, aim to change your mind.
The event is geared toward teaching the public how to save money, energy and the environment. Interactive exhibits, contest and prize giveaways are also part of festivities, including a chance to win Toyota's Prius, courtesy of Clear Channel stations KIKI Hot 93.9 FM, KUCD Star 101.9 FM and KDNN Island 98.5 FM. (The winner must be a Hawaii resident, 18 or older, with a valid Hawaii's driver's license.

Tree conference
Trees are affected by increasing urbanization and the Outdoor Circle and Kaulunani Urban Forestry program will host a conference to address the care of trees during all phases of building construction.
"Design, Construction and Maintenance with Trees in Mind" will be held Tuesday at the Waikiki Beach Marriott and Wednesday at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The conference is designed to give building industry professionals tools for preservation and care of trees.
