University of Hawaii architecture student Kody Kato checked out the hall of his newly retrofitted, energy-efficient dormitory apartment yesterday. Kato and professor Stephen Meder collaborated on producing the energy-sustainability project, which debuted at Hale Wainani on the UH-Manoa campus yesterday afternoon. The dorm featured compact fluorescent lighting, a new ENERGY STAR refrigerator and other energy-saving appliances. It is estimated that if the modifications are made uniform, UH could save about $120 a year per dorm room and enough power to supply 65 residential homes, Meder said.
