Hawaii tennis team wins national crown
Hawaii's entry in the USA League Tennis 3.5 Adult National Championship won two matches yesterday to claim the national title at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The team representing the USTA Hawaii Section defeated Aurora, Ill., 4-1 in the semifinals. Hawaii then beat San Juan, Puerto Rico, 3-2 in the championship match.
Members of the team captained by Ryan Perreira are Russ Kadooka, Benny Neumann, Byung-Ki Choi, Bernard Duarte, Grant Migita, Mark Yoshizu, Brian Hew, Chris Dang, Darin Kamiya, Naomi Yoshimura, Donn Bigelow, Justin McOuat, Yoh Kawanami, Thien Andy Ton and Matthew Chang.
UH sailing team wins regatta
The University of Hawaii women's sailing team overtook host Stanford to win the season-opening Bryson Regatta yesterday in California.
UH trailed Stanford by three points entering yesterday's races and tied the Cardinal with 78 points at the end of the regatta. The Rainbow Wahine won the tiebreaker with more first-place finished in the fleet racing competition.
Sophomores Tinja Anderson-Mitterling and Becky Mabardy had nine first-place finishes in the A division. Shandy Buckley and Crystal Bronte added six more in the B division.
HPU volleyball sweeps Chaminade
Barbara Martin slammed a match-high 13 kills to lead the Hawaii Pacific volleyball team to a 30-17, 30-13, 30-27 sweep of Chaminade in a Pacific West Conference match on Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Martin hit .478 in the match as HPU improved to 12-1. Chaminade fell to 8-7.
» Yu Chuan Weng's 33 kills lifted BYU-Hawaii to a 17-30, 30-22, 30-27, 30-28 win over Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday in Laie. Christina Bobik contributed 17 kills for BYUH (13-1). Taina Savage led UH-Hilo (10-5) with 22 kills.
