Na Alii overcome penalties

Wendell Say will take a sloppy win over a pretty loss any day.

Aiea's 26-0 win over Pearl City last night helped Na Alii even their record at 2-2 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West (4-2 overall). Lofa Liilii scored all four of Aiea's touchdowns, scoring on runs of 2 and 4 yards, and also on scoring tosses from Kali Kuia for 30 and 42 yards.

Nine penalties for 95 yards, however, also stood out.

"The kids did good, and we gotta continue to improve," Say said after a blustery, muddy night at Aiea's home field. "We had lots of penalties and we have to work on that. That's what hurt us against Kapolei and Waianae."

Many of the calls involved illegal use of hands, a few of which came far behind long gains.

"Some of my kids are aggressive. We don't want them to not be aggressive, but they have to be smarter," Say said.

Kuia completed his first nine pass attempts and finished 12-for-13 for 181 yards before sitting down late in the second quarter. He had two touchdowns with no interceptions.

"He was feverish today, threw up a little before the game," Say said.

Landon Dela Cruz gained 67 yards rushing to lead a balanced Aiea offense.

Liilii, a senior, caught six passes for 133 yards and ran for 33 yards on four carries. He also returned two punts for 46 yards and booted a punt of his own for 46 yards.

Aiea's defense limited Pearl City to 192 total yards in the shutout.

"It all starts with our line," Say said, praising Joe Mauga, Isaac Tuilaepa, Justin Hunt and Roland Foumai.

Pearl City opened the game by losing the ball on downs. Quarterback Andrew Blue was stopped on a fourth-and-1 quarterback draw from his own 25-yard line, giving Aiea an early break.

Kuia loosened up Pearl City's defense with a couple of quick completions before Liilii scored easily from 2 yards out to give Aiea a 6-0 lead.

On Aiea's next series, Kuia connected with Liilii on a fly pattern for a 30-yard scoring play, and Na Alii led 13-0 with 1:56 to go in the first quarter.

The two connected again on a 42-yard bomb on the next Aiea drive, and Na Alii led 20-0 with 11:50 left in the second quarter.

Liilii's final touchdown, a 6-yard run, capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive. Aiea led 26-0 with 1:55 left in the first half.

Pearl City dropped to 0-5 in league play (0-7 overall). It was Aiea's second shutout in a row of the Chargers. Last year, Aiea won 29-0.
