BYUH players win tennis titles
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Julia Ustyuzhanina and Junyoung Kim won their respective championship matches at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regionals yesterday in Pomona, Calif.
Ustyuzhanina defeated teammate Tetyana Bula 6-0, 6-2, while Kim defeated teammate Leon Soonalole 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Both advance to the national tournament to be held Oct. 13-16 in Fort Myers, Fla.
In doubles play, Ustyuzhanina and Bula defeated Cal Poly-Pomona's Katrina Holmberg and Jenny Tsai 8-1. Kim and Soonalole lost their doubles match against Brent Molden and Eric Rubens of UC San Diego 9-7.
Rainbows in second at Bryson
The 14th-ranked University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine sailing team sits in second place after the first day of the Bryson Regatta in Stanford, Calif., yesterday.
The 'Bows posted 47 points and trail host Stanford by three going into the final day of competition. Sophomores Tinja Anderson-Mitterling and Becky Mabardy led UH in the "A" division with 16 points.
Runners set personal bests at UCR Invite
The University of Hawaii cross country team finished 13th at the UC Riverside Invitational yesterday in its first Division I competition of the season.
Four UH runners set personal bests, while junior Sheena Thain was the team's top finisher, placing 47th overall in a season-best time of 19:30.
The Rainbow Wahine next compete in the Santa Clara Invitational on Oct. 15.
Trio of UH coaches at QB Club
University of Hawaii football running backs coach Mouse Davis, associate head coach George Lumpkin and assistant track and field coach Gerry Lindgren are the guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.
The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom. The public is invited.
