Mezin quickly rising to
the top of NEWMAC
tennis rankings
Jenna Mezin is the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Women's Singles Tennis Player of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.
A sophomore at Wellesley, Mezin helped the Blue to a 9-0 sweep of conference foe Wheaton with a 6-2, 6-1 win. She also reached the semifinal round of the ITA Northeast Regional Championship before losing to Amherst's Kristen Raverta 6-4, 6-4. Mezin's showing was the best of any NEWMAC player.
As a freshman, the Seabury Hall graduate earned NEWMAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Mezin partners with Hali Walther on Wellesley's No. 1 doubles team.
All-tournament again: Lindsey Lee was named to the Fairfield Volleyball Invitational all-tournament team Saturday, her second such honor this year.
The sophomore middle/outside hitter from Hilo helped the Fairfield Stags (9-8) to a 2-1 tourney record with 36 kills and 37 digs in three matches.
Sophomore setter Ashley Hanohano (St. Joseph) had 24 assists and 11 digs and Brandi Higa (Hawaii Baptist), a freshman defensive specialist, had 12 digs Saturday vs. Columbia.
Steady foot: Jeremy Shea has been perfect on seven kicking attempts for the Alcorn State Braves (1-2) this fall. The freshman kicker from Saint Louis has made both field-goal attempts and converted all five point-after-touchdown attempts.
He also kicks off and is averaging 41.2 yards on 10 kicks.
Fellow Crusader, 6-foot-4, 246-pound defensive tackle Oren Long, has been credited with four tackles, with two being for a loss. He has two assisted tackles, one quarterback sack and has broken up two pass attempts.
Defensive leader: Fili La'ulu, a 6-1, 235-pound junior linebacker, is the second leading tackler for the Southern Oregon Wolves. The Kahuku grad, who transferred to SOU from Utah, has seven solo and 22 assisted tackles.
