Hawaii's young golfers in South Carolina

Cyd Okino teed off this morning at the USGA Women's State Team Championships as the youngest player in the field at Bluffton, S.C.

The 11-year-old Okino, the reigning Hawaii women's match-play champion, is joined by two other Honolulu teens: Erin Matsuoka, 17, and Nicole Sakamoto, 15.

The 50-team competition at Berkeley Hall runs through Thursday.

Beach clinic features island players on tour

Pro beach volleyball players Stein Metzger, Mike Lambert and Sean Scott are the guest clinicians at this Friday's youth clinics at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

The free clinics are open to girls and boys, ages 8-17. The sessions are from 4 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m.

The three players are all Punahou School products. Lambert was last season's MVP of the Association of Volleyball Professionals.

Metzger and partner Jake Gibb are the top men's seeds in this weekend's $100,000 Best of the Beach at Queen's Beach. The top eight men's teams compete on Saturday with the top eight women's teams on Sunday.

Brigham Young-Hawaii enters D-II poll

Brigham Young-Hawaii (12-0) entered the CSTV/AVCA Division II volleyball coaches poll this week.

The Seasiders are No. 22.

Truman (16-1) remained at No. 1.

Hawaii Pacific (10-1) moved up one spot to No. 7, and Chaminade fell out of the poll from No. 25 after a loss last week to BYUH.

Irons brothers triumph in Quiksilver first round

Hawaii's Andy Irons and brother Bruce Irons won their first-round heats to advance all the way to the third round of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.

Three other Hawaii surfers -- Fred Patacchia Jr., Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb -- placed third in their first-round heats in the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour event, but still moved on to the second round.

Patacchia lost his second-round heat to Dane Reynolds. Garcia and Robb will surf in second-round heats today.

» Hawaii's Melanie Bartels beat out three others surfers to win the OP Newport Classic in California, an ASP World Qualifying Series event. Bartels won $2,000 for beating out second-place Kyla Langen, third-place Diana Mattison and fourth-place Darlene Connolly.

Hawaii's Hank Gaskell placed fourth in the men's OP Newport Classic, behind the winner, Nathaniel Curran, runner-up Brett Simpson and third-place Asher Nolan.

Shuttles offered for UH vs. Boise State game

Roberts Hawaii is offering round-trip shuttle buses for the Boise State vs. Hawaii game Saturday.

The air-conditioned buses service three areas. Bus No. 1 picks up at Mililani Mauka Park 'n' Ride at 4:30 p.m. Bus No. 2 picks up at Kailua District Park at 4:15 p.m. and then Windward Mall at 4:30 p.m. Bus No. 3 picks up at Hawaii Kai Park 'n' Ride at 4:15 p.m. and Kahala Mall at 4:30 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 832-4886. The cost is $6.
