Kamehameha's Kamuela Brito put a hit on Punahou's Colin Viloria in the first half.

Warriors upset
No. 1 Buffanblu

The best part about last night's showdown between No. 1 Punahou and No. 2 Kamehameha is that the two teams will meet again this year.

But for now, it's the Warriors who took control of the ILH as they overcame four turnovers to defeat Punahou 27-17 last night in a wild game.

Down three with less than 4 minutes to go, the Buffanblu fumbled on first and goal from the 3-yard line and Jeremiah Dela Pena went 85 yards for a score on the ensuing drive to help kick-start the Warriors' ILH regular season with a victory.

"I've been saying it all year, the strength of this team is the character of our young men," Warriors coach Doss Tannehill said.

In a matchup of two of the top receivers in the league, Kamehameha's Aaron Nichols got the best of Punahou's Miah Ostrowski, hauling in five catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Ostrowski finished with 11 catches for 129 yards and one score.

"I don't know him at all, but I have a lot of respect for him," Nichols said. "We've been working on our throwing game all week and we made the big plays we needed to."

Warriors junior quarterback George Kaai completed just six passes the entire game, but hooked up with Nichols on two long touchdown passes of 90 and 80 yards.

"(Aaron) is a special athlete and we needed to utilize him and get him the ball whenever we could," Tannehill said.

Nichols' first touchdown reception of 90 yards came on Kamehameha's first possession of the second half after both teams struggled in the first half. The score gave Kamehameha a 13-3 lead, which looked like it might hold up as its defense yielded only 36 yards in the first half.

But Ostrowski would answer right back, hooking up with Brett Kan for a 59-yard touchdown pass on the next play following the kickoff to cut the lead back to three.

"This was our game, we had it on the 3-yard line and couldn't convert," Ostrowski said. "We've been coming out too late and starting slow and it killed us tonight. We shot ourselves in the foot."

Defense and turnovers told the story of the first half, as each team went three and out on its first two possessions. The Warriors finally put a drive together on their third attempt, taking the ball 61 yards to inside the Punahou 20. But Sam Higgins, returning from an injury suffered two weeks ago on the same field, came up with a huge interception to turn Kamehameha away.

A Kamehameha fumble early in the second quarter gave Punahou the ball deep in Warriors territory, and the Buffanblu cashed in for three points on a 40-yard field goal by River Kim.

But the Kamehameha defense would get it back with a little less than 3 minutes remaining as Gerritt Vincent intercepted a Kan pass and returned it 30 yards for the only first-half touchdown.

"They're an extremely formidable opponent and it seemed the breaks just went our way," Tannehill said.

Nichols' second touchdown, an 80-yarder, pushed Kamehameha's lead back to 10. But as was the case all night, the Buffanblu would answer right back by turning to Ostrowski once again. The junior hauled in a shoe-string catch on fourth and 3 to put the ball inside the 5-yard line and Kan finished off the drive with a 1-yard sneak.

The Warriors fumbled the kickoff right back to the Buffanblu, who took the ball inside the 5-yard line before Kalama Kaluhiokalani's fumble recovery on a shaky handoff from Kan to running back Zac Yamagishi helped seal Punahou's first loss of the season.
