Vulcans finish fourth in opener

Alva Wedland's final round of 3-under-par 68 helped the Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team to a fourth-place finish in their season opener at the St. Martin's Invitational in Tumwater, Wash.

Wedland finished tied for 14th with teammate Kevin Shimomura with a three-round total of 223.

Western Washington won the nine-team tourney with an 860. Hilo's team total was 894.

Seasiders sweep three from D-III

The Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team won three games yesterday against Division III teams in its BYUH Water Polo Tournament at Punahou.

The No. 17 Seasiders defeated Claremont-McKenna twice, 8-5 and 7-2. Brett Hearn led BYUH with five goals. Former Punahou graduate Robby Field totaled 14 saves in the goal for the Stags.

BYUH (5-2) capped off the tournament, moved from Laie because of rain, with a 12-6 win over La Verne. Earlier, La Verne defeated Chaminade 11-5. Kamehameha alum Gerald Bolson scored one goal in the win. Chaminade was led by Lance Takenaka's three goals.

HPU harriers sweep local meet

The Hawaii Pacific cross country teams swept the Brigham Young-Hawaii Invitational in Laie yesterday.

The HPU women won with 30 points as Louise Brasen and Inga Burger finished first and second. The HPU men won with 32 points as Jacob Klausen, Casper Dahl and Attila Hegyaljai finished 1-2-3. Host BYUH finished second in both divisions.

UH, Castle coaches at Quarterback Club

Tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club features University of Hawaii football coaches Rich Miano and Wes Suan and Castle football coach Nelson Maeda.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom with the program following at noon. The public is invited.
