Kona nurse to head national association

Karen Lee Klemme of Kona, certified rehabilitation registered nurse and nurse life care planner, has been elected president of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses.

She also is president-elect of the Aloha Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.

Klemme is in private practice in Kailua-Kona with emphasis on life care planning and case management and serves clients statewide.

She is a volunteer board member of the Hawaii Community Caregivers Network and co-facilitates monthly support group meetings for the Brain Injury Association of Hawaii, Kona Chapter.

MedQUEST info available in Hauula

Information about free QUEST and Medicaid health insurance for teens will be provided at a booth at Kahuku High School's annual Project GRAD from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Hauula Shopping Center.

Teens up to 19 may be eligible for free health insurance, including those with working parents, according to Hawaii Covering Kids Kahuku Local Project.

Eligibility is based on family size and household income, so a family of four earning about $44,500 may qualify. For more information, call 387-9217 or 293-9221, ext. 360.

HMSA questionnaire printed in Japanese

Japanese-speaking members of the Hawaii Medical Service Association may obtain a Japanese-language version of a lifestyle and health risk assessment questionnaire used in HMSA's HealthPass program.

The new version of the questionnaire, called Succeed, may be completed by members in their homes.

The questionnaire includes an inventory of a member's lifestyle and health habits. This information is combined with biometrics screening measurements taken at the member's scheduled HealthPass visit to produce a health improvement plan.

Fire destroys house far from hydrant

A five-bedroom home in Kona was destroyed Friday afternoon by fire.

When Hawaii County fire engines arrived at 2:56 p.m., the entire roof of the 2,500-square- foot wood frame building collapsed.

The home was valued at $200,000. No one was home when the fire occurred.

Fire engines were used to shuttle water to the scene, the fire department said. The nearest hydrant to the home, at 73-4617 Kohanaiki Road, is about one-fourth of a mile away.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

HPD seeks missing Mililani man, 79

George Furtado: He is described as distraught over his wife's health problems

Police are searching for a 79-year-old Mililani man last seen Wednesday night.

Police said George Furtado had been emotionally distraught over his wife's health problems.

Furtado was last seen going to bed 10 p.m. Wednesday. Family members discovered him missing 6 a.m. Thursday.

Family and friends have neither seen nor heard from him since.

Furtado is described as being of Caucasian-Hawaiian ethnicity, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with white hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Officer James Vasconcellos at 529-3064 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cell phone.

Violence at hotel leads to man's arrest

Police arrested a man who allegedly kicked in the front door of an office at a Waikiki hotel and then allegedly used a hammer to pry open an inner door.

The incident happened at about 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police later found the man, 43, within the hotel and arrested him for investigation of second-degree burglary.
