Seasiders upset Silverswords

Yu Chuan Weng pounded down 20 kills and Lilly Tufuga added 12 as the Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team remained undefeated with a 30-18, 30-20, 30-27 over Chaminade last night in Laie.

Tufuga hit for a .500 percentage and Roseanne Vea had 13 digs for BYUH (11-0).

Trina Kauliakamoa had 12 kills for the Silverswords (8-4).

Bown, Duggins in beach tourney: Former University of Hawaii volleyball players Heather Bown, Lauren Duggins and Heidi Ilustre headline the King and Queen of the Beach Volleyball Tournament at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

The men's and women's doubles tourney starts today with pool play at 8:30 a.m. The top eight teams advance to tomorrow's semifinals and finals. Finals start around 2 p.m.

Vulcans sitting in sixth in golf opener

Hawaii-Hilo golfer Kevin Shimomura fired a five-over-par 147 and is tied for 10th place after the second round of the St. Martin's Invitational at Tumwater, Wash.

The Vulcans are currently in sixth place in the nine-team field, trailing leader and host St. Martin's by 19 strokes. Teammate Colin Gilliam is four strokes behind Shimomura and tied for 20th.

Casey Kobashigawa, an Iolani graduate on the St. Martin's team, withdrew from the tournament. The final round is today.

Seasiders maul Leopards

The No. 17 Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team downed La Verne 19-3 in the opening match of the BYUH Water Polo Tournament yesterday in Laie.

James Jacobson, Trent Johnson and Stu Johnson scored three goals each in the win. Kenneth Nicholas, who started at goalie for an ill Peter Caley, finished with six saves.

Sean Steele, a freshman from Manoa, scored one goal for La Verne (4-3).

The tournament continues today with the Seasiders (2-2) facing Claremont-McKenna at 11:30 a.m. and La Verne at 6 p.m.
