Canadian airline plans new service to Hawaii

Canada-based airline company WestJet will begin service from Vancouver, Canada, to Honolulu Dec. 9 and to Maui beginning Dec. 17.

The airline plans five nonstop flights to Honolulu and two to Maui each week using Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 jets.

"Hawaii is one of the destinations that our loyal guests and dedicated WestJetters have been asking us to serve for several years," said Sean Durfy, executive vice president of marketing and sales.

Flights will depart from Vancouver for Honolulu and Maui at 7 p.m. local time and will arrive in Honolulu at 10:58 p.m. or on Maui at 10:53 p.m. One hour after those arrival times, flights will depart for Vancouver and will arrive at 7:31 a.m. from Maui or 7:50 a.m. local time from Honolulu.

Bank's relief fund hits $250,000

First Hawaiian Bank's Katrina Relief Fund has collected more than $250,000 for Hurricane relief efforts by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

The bank created its relief fund on Aug. 31 and kicked off the effort with a donation of $25,000 to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. The bank set up accounts to enable bank customers and the public to make donations at any of the 61 First Hawaiian branches.

First Hawaiian said it is still accepting contributions.

"We'd love to hit our target of $300,000. We're almost there," said First Hawaiian Bank President and Chief Executive Don Horner.

Federated to cut jobs, rename stores

CINCINNATI » Federated Department Stores Inc. said yesterday it is planning to cut up to 6,200 jobs beginning next year and change all 62 Marshall Field's stores to the Macy's name in the fall of 2006 in its biggest steps yet since completing its acquisition of May Department Stores Inc.

The operator of Bloomingdale's also said it will shed the Philadelphia-based bridal group division it acquired from May and is studying what to do with its Lord & Taylor division.

Federated had pledged not to cut any jobs before March 1 as part of its acquisition of its rival.

» Dell Inc., the world's largest direct computer seller, launched yesterday a new flash-memory digital music player designed to compete with the iPod Shuffle. Both devices are $99 and come equipped with 512 megabytes of memory, but Dell asserts the Ditty can hold up to 220 songs while the same-sized Shuffle stores about 120.

» Profits at Wall Street brokerage house Goldman Sachs Group Inc. climbed 83 percent in the third quarter on very strong fixed income trading and a surge in fees from the company's merger-and-acquisition business.

» Cingular Wireless has appointed Ed Maruyama the company's Hawaii market sales director. He previously served as Cingular's Little Rock, Ark., sales operations director.

» First Hawaiian Bank has promoted Marilyn E.A. Kunitake and Cristopher J. Borden to vice presidents. Kunitake will be responsible for real estate residential loans. She joined the company in 1991 as a management trainee. Borden will portfolio manager for Bishop Street Capital Management. He joined the company in 2000 as a performance analyst. The bank also hired George C.K. Leong as vice president of its Commercial Real Estate Division. He previously was a vice president at American Savings Bank.

» Atlas Insurance Agency Inc. has appointed David Ching risk consultant. He will be responsible for providing safety consultation and training for the company's construction and general industry clientele. He most recently served as Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. safety administrator.

» Atlantis Adventures has appointed David Finnell controller. He has over 20 years experience as controller and manager of accounting departments. He previously managed all account operations for National Commercial Flooring in Alexandria, Va.

» SMG Hawaii has appointed Susan Nakamura as the Hawaii Convention Center's marketing manager. She will be responsible for enhancing the center's brand plan and developing marketing and promotional programs.
