Rotich, Kusutani win Maui Marathon

Jacob Rotich of Kenya successfully defended his title in the Maui Marathon yesterday, winning the 35th annual race with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 58 seconds. Sayuri Kusutani of Japan won the women's division with a time of 2:55:01.

Rotich, 28, claimed the $1,500 first prize by finishing nearly 2 minutes ahead of runner-up Katushi Fuchiwaki of Japan. Kula's Matthew Holton took home $1,250 as the third-place finisher ($500) and the first Maui resident to cross the finish line ($750).

The top four women's finishers were from Japan, with Kusutani earning $2,250. Yoko Yamazawa (3:06:41) finished second and Miyuki Kaneko (3:11:58) placed third. Defending champion Jeannie Wokasch-Young of Honolulu was fifth.

Outrigger tops Henry Ayau Memorial

Outrigger Canoe Club finished first in the Henry Ayau Memorial Race yesterday, paddling from Maunalua Bay to Ko Olina in 3 hours, 55 minutes, 32 seconds.

Lanikai placed second at 3:56:24.7 and Hui Lanakila came in third at 4:03.21.4.

Irons upset at Boost Mobile Pro

Kauai's Andy Irons was upset by Phillip MacDonald of Australia in the quarterfinals of the Boost Mobile Pro of Surf at Lower Trestels, Calif.

MacDonald edged Irons 15.44-15.34 and went on to reach the finals, where he lost to top-ranked Kelly Slater. Irons remains second in the Association of Surfing Professionals rankings with 6,528 points.

Kalani Robb also lost in the quarterfinals, falling to Slater 17.10-11.67.

Sea Warriors sweep Notre Dame de Namur

Flavia Brakling hammered 15 kills to lead the Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team to a 30-11, 30-14, 30-12 sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at St. Andrews Priory.

The Sea Warriors hit .564 as a team and committed just seven hitting errors in improving at 10-1. Antje Buskies had five of HPU's 13 service aces.
