Sea Warriors, former Seasider win Big Wave

The Hawaii Pacific men and Brigham Young women won their divisions at the Big Wave Cross Country Invitational at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course yesterday.

HPU, led by Jacob Kausen's second-place finish, won with 49 points, edging Houston by one point. Houston's Sesar Figueroa won the 5-kilometer race in 15:23.8.

Chelsea Smith McKell won her second Big Wave title as BYU took the top five finishing spots to win with 15 points. HPU was second with 62. Smith McKell won the individual title last year while competing for BYU-Hawaii. She was a two-time NCAA Division II champion, before transferring to the Provo, Utah, campus.

Vulcans extend win streak to 5

Rose Ramsey had 16 kills and Taina Savage added 14 kills and 12 digs as the Hawaii-Hilo volleyball team defeated Grand Canyon 30-17, 30-21, 19-30, 30-23 in Phoenix last night to extend its winning streak to five matches.

Cori Sutter finished with a .500 hitting percentage and 12 kills for the Vulcans (8-4). The Antelopes (4-9) outblocked Hilo 5 -1.

Both teams meet again tomorrow night.

Cal Ripken coach at Quarterback Club

Gerald Oda, coach of the Oahu Cal Ripken All-Stars national championship team, headlines tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Ballroom.

Also speaking will be University of Hawaii football coaches Mouse Davis and Vantz Singletary.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon.

Owens off Jags' inactive list

After spending last week on the Jacksonville Jaguars' inactive list, former Hawaii standout Chad Owens will be in uniform for the Jags' game at Indianapolis today, the Florida Times-Union reported in its online edition yesterday.

Owens, a rookie, is listed as a wide receiver and punt returner for Jacksonville.
