Stanley leads U.S. over Cuba

Former University of Hawaii player Clay Stanley had 13 kills as the USA men's national volleyball team defeated Cuba 25-22, 25-27, 25-23, 25-22 in the championship game of the NORECA Continental Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Thursday night.

Stanley also had a service ace and hit for a .524 percentage as the Americans went undefeated in five matches in the tourney and dropped just one set.

Team USA improved to 23-5 this season and defended its NORECA title won in 2003. It's the first time in 20 years Team USA has won back-to-back crowns.

UH coach Mike Wilton and consultant Carl McGown were a part of the Team USA coaching staff.

Host Canada won the bronze, followed by the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Panama and Barbados.

With the win, Team USA qualified for the Grand Champions Cup from Nov. 22 to 27 in Japan.

» Trina Kauliakamoa put down 13 kills and Marijana Stanic added 12 as Chaminade swept Notre Dame de Namur 30-17, 30-14, 30-21 last night at McCabe Gym.

The Silverswords improved to 8-3 while the Argonauts dropped to 4-11.

Seasiders score 18 against Silverswords

James Jacobson scored four goals and nine others scored as the No. 17 Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team beat Chaminade 18-5 last night in Laie.

It was the first win of the season for the Seasiders (1-2). The Silverswords dropped to 1-2.
