The Bloomberg / Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.


Hoku catapults 59%

Hoku Scientific Inc. rocketed 59.4 percent this week -- 61.4 percent the last two days -- after two of the company's underwriters issued "outperform" ratings on the stock on Wednesday. The performance by the Kapolei-based fuel-cell technology developer easily outdistanced 10 other stocks in the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin index and boosted the index nearly 16 percent for the week. Hoku, which went public on Aug. 5 at $6, closed yesterday at $9.88 after reaching an intraday high of $10.69.

Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. was the second-best performer as it gained $1.4 percent to close yesterday at $27.88.
