WAHINE SOCCER

Hawaii ties Weber State
in tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. » Neither the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine nor the Weber State Wildcats could finish yesterday despite taking a total of 32 shots in the Long Beach State 49er Soccer Classic.

The 0-0 tie came in Hawaii's third overtime match this year.

The Wahine (2-2-1) had a good chance in the 41st minute when Adria Campbell found Aimee Cohen with a through ball, but Weber State goalkeeper Kandice Golar deflected the point-blank shot from 12 yards out over the crossbar.

In the first overtime, Koren Takeyama missed wide left on a shot from inside the box.

"We had six good chances, six sure goals that we missed. We got nervous inside the box and we can't afford to do that," Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.

Freshman goalkeeper Kori Lu earned the first complete-match shutout of her career. She made six saves and was only in trouble once.

"Kori misjudged one ball and left the goal open," Tenzing said. "The Weber State player pushed the ball back and when the shot was taken Kelly McCloskey was there to clear it away.

"Our defense was terrific. They had a lot of shots (18), but they were from all over and mostly from the outside. There was nothing that really caused any trouble. We played hard, gave a good effort and created chances. The results just weren't there."

This was the 17th tie match in the 12-year history of the program and the fifth that ended 0-0. All time, UH is 12-8-16 in overtime matches.

The Wahine play Long Beach State, a 1-0 winner over Weber State (1-3-1) on Thursday, for the Classic championship tomorrow.
