Maui player finishes second at U.S. Open

Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler of Maui and partner Jan Proctor of Florida fell to the Dutch team of Esther Vergeer and Kori Homan in the final of the U.S. Open wheelchair doubles yesterday in New York.

Vergeer and Homan defeated Arnoult-Ritthaler, ranked No. 1 in the U.S., and Proctor, 6-3, 6-1.

Lambert crowned best player on the beach

Punahou alum Mike Lambert defeated Jake Gibb in the final of the AVP Las Vegas Aquafina Shootout to be crowned best player on the beach yesterday.

Lambert and fellow Punahou graduate Stein Metzger swept Gibb and Sean Rosenthal 21-18, 21-18. Lambert was awarded $29,750 for the win, while Metzger received $13,500 for his third-place finish. Former University of Hawaii player Sean Scott finished seventh. Misty May-Treanor won the women's competition.

Seasiders down Grand Canyon in straight games

The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team remained perfect in the 2005 season with a sweep of Grand Canyon, 30-18, 30-21, 30-24, in Phoenix, Ariz. The Seasiders improved to 9-0. Outside hitter Yu Chuan Weng pounded 22 kills, while Lilly Tufuga added 10. The Seasiders will face Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Laie.

» Chaminade was also victorious on the road, with a three-game win in Belmont, Calif., against Notre Dame de Namur, 30-28, 30-28, 30-18.

HPU harriers sweep in Laie

The Hawaii Pacific men's and women's cross country teams won the Chaminade Invitational yesterday in Laie.

Jacob Klausen won the men's race and led five Sea Warriors into the top 10 as HPU won with 25 points. Klausen completed the 8-kilometer course in 26:53.

Brigham Young-Hawaii was second with 30.

HPU's Anne Olesen dominated the women's 5K with a time of 18:33, 1 minute ahead of runner-up and teammate Pia Folsing.

HPU won with 31 points, followed by BYUH with 35, Hawaii with 69 and Chaminade with 92.

BYUH dominates in exhibition win

Jamie Jacobson scored four goals to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team to a 17-9 win over the Hawaiian Masters yesterday in an exhibition match at the BYUH pool.

Koen Plasmeijer, Brett Hearn and Vlada Stankovic each added three goals for the Seasiders. BYUH plays Chaminade on Friday at 7 p.m. at the BYUH pool.

Holiday headlines QB Club

Former University of Hawaii basketball player Dwight Holiday, and Warrior football coaches Cal Lee and Dan Morrison are the scheduled guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Pagoda ballroom. The public is invited.

Volleyball tourney set for tomorrow

The second-annual Restaurant and Bar Challenge beach volleyball tournament takes place tomorrow at Queen's Beach starting at 9 a.m. Partial proceeds will go to the Hawaii Food Bank, and donations will also be accepted at the event.
