RESTAURANT REPORT
Dining around the islands

Birthday benefit

Roy's Ko Olina celebrates its first anniversary with a fund-raiser to help out a teenager in need.

The full Roy's team of Hawaii chefs will be serving up their specialties next Sunday to support the health-care needs of 13-year-old Taylor "Tee" Burton, who is facing her third heart transplant.

The chefs are gathering from chef Roy Yamaguchi's six restaurants on Oahu, the Big Island, Kauai and Maui. Their dishes will be complemented by specially selected beers and wines.

Taylor, born in Honolulu with a congenital heart defect, underwent her first heart transplant at age 5, only to need another one seven years later. She is awaiting a third transplant in Santa Monica, Calif., near her heart specialists at UCLA.

Tickets for the 6 p.m. "walk-around" event are $100 in advance, $125 at the door. The event includes entertainment and a silent auction. Call 676-7697.

In addition, Ko Olina Golf Club is offering a $39 nine-hole round of golf on the afternoon before the dinner, with a portion of proceeds going to Taylor's benefit fund. Tee times are from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Call 676-5300.

Luau extravaganza

The Hawaiian musical trio Na Palapalai and Sonny Ching's halau Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu will perform at a luau at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental celebrating the Aloha Festivals.

The event, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, will feature solo dances by the last three Miss Aloha Hula title-holders from the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo -- Jennifer Oyama, Natasha Akau and Maile Francisco -- all from Ching's halau.

The menu will include whole roasted pig and other luau favorites, as well as contemporary dishes such as Seared Ahi & Oriental Vegetable Salad.

Tickets are $95, $75 for children. Kamaaina room packages are available for those who wish to sleep over. Call 739-8890.
