‘Hawaii Goes Fishing’
crew finds chef
Gannon in Alaska

Dean Sensui is back from another Alaska trip filming OC16's "Hawaii Goes Fishing" with Ben Wong and Bob Pritchard and says they ran into chef Beverly Gannon at Waterfall Resort. "Bev was out catching salmon and halibut for the first time ever and managed to pull in a bunch of Coho (silver) salmon along with a hefty 82-pound halibut," Dean said. He's sure Bev, owner of Hali'imaile General Store/Restaurant on Maui, had salmon and prime cuts of halibut on the menu after she returned home with her catch. Bev is also executive chef of Hawaiian Airlines. Dean says she will be in one of their shows. The crew was in Alaska doing stories on Waterfall Resort. They arrived at Waterfall on a 45-minute floatplane flight, first time on such an aircraft for Dean, who has flown airplanes. "Talk about the ultimate in fishing machines," he said ...

The Aloha Medical Mission is presenting a benefit concert, "Four Doctors, a Patient and an Idol," Sept. 24 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. The "Idol" is Jasmine Trias, of "American Idol" fame; the "Patient" is Chris Cerna, a gifted blind pianist who was helped by the mission, and the "Four Doctors" are Jorge Camara, Timothy Lee, Reuben Guerrero and Bradley Wong, all fine pianists. KGMB's Kim Gennaula will emcee. Call 593-9696 for ticket info. The mission provides free medical and dental services to the most needy in Hawaii, Asia and other spots. Academy of Arts to show special Pacific exhibit

And now for some culture: Folks at the Academy of Arts are pumped up about an exhibition that won't open until February next year. But they have good reason to be stoked, because it's an exhibit of Pacific objects collected during the voyages of Captain James Cook between 1768 and 1779. "Life in the Pacific of the 1700s" will be on view Feb. 23 through May 14. Thirty-five of the 500 pieces are from Hawaii. Most are from Tonga, Tahiti and New Zealand. Others are from the Society Islands, the Marquesas, New Caledonia, New Hebrides and the Northwest Coast of America. The collection is held by Germany's University of Goettingen.
