Concert preview

Chamber Music Hawaii's Galliard String Quartet will be featured in a "Live from the Atherton" broadcast at 3 p.m. Thursday on KHPR, KKUA and KANO radio stations.

The ensemble will offer a preview of concerts scheduled for Sept. 12 at Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College, and Sept. 19 at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Special guests will be pianist Beebe Freitas and baritone Leon Williams. Hawaii Public Radio music director Gene Schiller will host, before a studio audience.

Seating in the studio audience is free, but limited. Call 955-8821.

Help sponsor a child

The Honolulu Hibiscus Lions Club is seeking help in efforts to sponsor 12 Korean children who have had to become the breadwinners for their families.

With the goal of raising $10,000, the club is hosting a dinner show of Korean cultural entertainment on Oct. 22 at the Sheraton Waikiki. Tickets are $22. Businesses may also contribute by advertising in the evening's program.

Radio voices wanted

Open auditions will be held this weekend for voice actors for a series of radio plays by local authors.

The tryouts will he held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio, 738 Kaheka St.

Those auditioning should prepare two contrasting monologues; contemporary material preferred. A joke or a capella song may also be performed. Presentations may last no longer than four minutes.

An ensemble core of performers will be directed by David C. Farmer in the series.

Are you a diva?

Na Leo Lani, the Hawaii chapter of Sweet Adelines, is holding a guest night for new voices at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at St. Francis School in Manoa.

Na Leo Lani is a 40-member women's chorus that performs a cappella in four-part harmony -- commonly known as barbershop singing. Anyone interested in seeing what it's like is invited to this special rehearsal.

Rehearsals are normally held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the school, located at 2707 Pamoa Road. Call 944-3373.

Wanted: Ballet dancers

Ballet Hawaii will hold auditions for its annual holiday performance of "Nutcracker" on two islands.

Auditions for Maui performances will be from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. A total of 30 to 75 dancers of all ages and levels are needed.

Honolulu auditions will be 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Ballet Hawaii Studio in the Dole Cannery.
