Pedestrian critically hurt in accident

A 28-year-old man was critically injured Thursday night when a minivan struck him as he crossed Kapiolani Boulevard near Mahiai Street.

Police said the man was not in a crosswalk as he crossed Kapiolani in a northbound direction.

A 55-year-old local woman was driving a green Caravan westbound on Kapiolani when the minivan struck the pedestrian at about 9:55 p.m. yesterday.

The man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The driver was not injured.

Police said neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the accident.

Missing hiker returns safely from trail

An avid hiker who was reported missing late Thursday walked out of the Makiki Heights area just fine yesterday morning.

Clifford Lau, who went for a hike with his two dogs near the Hawaii Nature Center, said he decided to stay on the trail due to darkness and then walk out at first light.

Fire and police personnel had planned on searching the area after family and friends were concerned because Lau had not returned home, and his vehicle was found at the entrance to the nature center.
