Jade Moon takes time
off TV to donate
kidney to father

KGMB-TV will lose lead anchor Jade Moon for a brief bit. She "has made a life-changing decision," News Director Tauna Lange said.

Moon took leave after Friday to donate a kidney to her father, a longtime dialysis patient. She hopes to improve his quality of life. "The other thing I hope to accomplish is to help people realize the great importance of organ donations for the many, many people who are in dire need," Moon said in a statement.

Stacy Loe and Jim Mendoza will co-anchor to fill in for Moon, who will return following her recovery from surgery.

Separately, KGMB also will lose reporter, weathercaster and sometime anchor Angela Keen after Sept. 8.

Not bound to KGMB by a contract with any pesky noncompete clauses, Keen will move across town to KHNL-TV and KFVE-TV to co-anchor the weekday morning news show with Lyle Galdeira from 5 to 7 a.m. She will replace co-anchor Joann Shin, who will return to reporting full-time.

Keen has worked at KGMB for 11 1/2 years and previously worked in television and radio in Nebraska.

Her first day at KHNL will be Sept. 26 to learn the systems, said John Fink, vice president and general manager. Keen's first day anchoring may come a week later, he said.

Planet gets new ruler

Kalowena Komeiji has been named publisher of the Downtown Planet, the free weekly newspaper that is distributed in Honolulu's business core and spreading into greater Honolulu and Waikiki.

Komeiji was most recently vice president for community relations at PBS Hawaii, but also is well-known for her nonprofit work, including the drive to seek a bone marrow donor for the late Alana Dung.

Komeiji replaces Leslie Light, who moved back to Texas. Her appointment also gives Editor Cathy Cruz one less hat to wear.
