UH sailing tops preseason rankings

The University of Hawaii coed sailing team is ranked first in the Sailing World preseason poll for the second time in the program's history.

UH finished second in the coed dinghy nationals last season and finished fifth in the final rankings, after capturing the national championship in 2004. Senior All-American Bryan Lake returns after becoming only the second skipper to win the A Division at the national championships three times.

UH last topped the preseason poll prior to the 1994-95 season.

The UH women's team enters the season ranked 14th in Sailing World's poll. The Rainbow Wahine had a string of seven consecutive appearances in the national championships snapped last season.

The UH coed and women's teams open the season Oct. 1-2.

Kim tops Senior Amateur qualifying

Bev Kim of Honolulu shot an 8-over-par 80 to win medalist honors at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur sectional qualifier yesterday at Honolulu Country Club.

Rose Pagan of Kula finished second at 83. Lily Yao of Honolulu shot an 84 and won a playoff with Kapolei's Michiko Kimura to claim third place. Kimura and Kathy Ordway are the alternates.

The qualifiers earn a spot in the Senior Women's Amateur Championship set for Sept. 17-22 at The Apawamis Club in New York.

» Kevin Carll of Ko Olina Golf Club takes a three-stroke lead into today's final round of the Mauna Kea Resort Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island.

Carll shot a 72 yesterday for a two-day total of 141. Defending champion John Lynch is second at 144. Rodney Acia leads the senior division at 147. Ray DeMello leads the super-senior division at 159.

Sailing canoes finish season off Kauai

Sixteen traditional sailing canoes are expected to compete in Saturday's Kendall Pacific Challenge, the final race of the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association, off Kauai.

The 35-mile race begins at Kalapaki Beach in Nawiliwili at 10 a.m., with the finish in front of the Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages. The first canoes are expected around 3 p.m.

Defending series and race champion Marvin Otsuji of Kauai currently trails Maui's Mike Spalding in the point standings. Spalding, captain of "Makakoa," has amassed 120 points to 110 for Otsuji, the captain of Kamakakoa.

UH-Hilo opens volleyball season

The UH-Hilo gym will be a busy place starting tomorrow with 24 volleyball matches set to played over the next three days.

The Vulcans face Doane College tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. to close a five-match slate including BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific, and Waldorf College. Play starts at 2:30 p.m.

The 10-team 12th annual Hawaiian Style Classic begins at 9 a.m. on Friday and runs through Saturday. Joining the other six teams will be Alaska-Anchorage, Central Washington, Northern State and Seattle College.
