Iolani punishes Farrington
in Bray Classic

An Iolani offense built on speed blazed to an early lead and rolled to a 48-15 win over Farrington in the feature game of the Father Bray Classic last night at Aloha Stadium.

The Raiders' efficient no-huddle attack reached the end zone on five of its first six possessions to open up a 35-0 lead midway through the second quarter and eased their way to the season-opening nonleague victory.

"We're not the biggest physically, so we have to take every kind of advantage that we can," Iolani coach Wendell Look said of the Raiders' fast-break style offense. "We just try to keep teams on their heels and play an up-tempo game. Farrington is very physical and if we can get them spread out and moving that works to our advantage."

Iolani quarterback Kiran Kepo'o was in the game for just 13 plays, but made the most of his time on the field. He completed five of seven passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns before going to the bench in the second quarter to give backup Ryan Dung needed experience.

Running back Michael Hirokawa averaged nearly 21 yards on his seven first-half carries, which included a 79-yard sprint to the end zone. He didn't play in the second half and finished with 144 yards.

"We've got a lot of veterans on offense, except for our guys up front," Look said. "Kiran, our wides, and our slots and running backs have some experience, so they executed quite well tonight."

The Raiders defense limited Farrington to 85 first-half yards, the offense racked up 281 and the secondary snagged five interceptions in the game.

"Iolani's always a team that's prepared, disciplined, quick," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "You could see which team was more in shape tonight and that was Iolani. We have a lot of things to work on."

The scoring started early for Iolani as the Raiders' attack didn't allow the Governors much time to catch their breath.

The Raiders took the opening kickoff and drove 73 yards in eight plays. Even a Raider miscue turned golden as Kepo'o scooped up his own fumble at the Farrington 1 and took it into the end zone.

Kepo'o ended the next two possessions with scoring passes to Travis Nishioka, the first on a wide receiver screen and the second on a 31-yard streak down the right sideline.

Dung replaced Kepo'o late in the first period and added a 28-yard touchdown pass to Kekai Kealoha on the opening play of the second quarter.

Hirokawa later ran past the Farrington defense on a draw play to put the Raiders up 35-0 entering halftime.

"We just came back from two weeks of two-a-days and we were ready to play," Hirokawa said. "The O-line did a good job of blocking. They're kind of small but they made it up with their hearts."

Pac-Five 17, Waialua 7

Bryson Beirne passed for 157 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Wolfpack built a 17-0 lead and held off the Bulldogs in the first game of the Father Bray Classic doubleheader.

Royce Alvarado caught seven passes for 114 yards for Pac-Five.

Waialua gained 189 yards in the second half and held Pac-Five to 67, but could only manage one score. Adam Foster caught five passes for 104 yards, including a 39-yard scoring pass from Joshua Whittaker in the fourth quarter.
