Church seeks alto for scholarship position

A scholarship for voice students that will provide professional training and opportunities for public appearances is being offered by Church of the Crossroads.

This year, the church is seeking an alto with some music-reading ability who is willing to sing with the church choir for the following year. The annual scholarship program is open to applicants of all ages, and church membership is not a requirement.

A scholarship recipient will receive $1,000 a year for two years, plus compensation when appearing in special musical events.

The student is required to sing with the choir at weekly services and has opportunities to perform as soloist.

Four people in the other voice ranges are currently receiving assistance from the church, which has funded tuition for 75 people.

Applications are available from Gloria Ganibi at the church office, 1212 University Ave., 949-2220, gloriajoyce@juno.com.

Chinese Catholic Club to mark 80 years

The Chinese Catholic Club will celebrate its 80th anniversary at a Sept. 10 luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel ballroom.

The group was started in 1925 for students at the former St. Louis College on College Walk in downtown Honolulu, predecessor of Saint Louis School. At the time, "we were all converts," said Michael Lum, a member since 1938.

It has continued as an ethnic club within several Catholic parishes. Members have sponsored tuition scholarships through the years for prospective priests and nuns, Lum said.

The 200 active members are seeking former members to return for the "Down Memory Lane" anniversary party.

Thursday is the deadline for reservations. Call Pearl Fu Wong, 955-3241.
